How the wind blows -   Como sople el viento

2005 is the project's fourth year of meteorological measurements at Hawaii - the weather is an important factor controlling turtle behaviour and nest conditions. Our measurements are made manually however, at dawn, noon and dusk, which has not enabled us to get a good appreciation of the wind conditions, which change hourly. In 2005 we built and installed a simple recording anemometer (5m above ground level). The data we are logging now clearly show the wind systems we are dealing with - click on the diagram below to see it better. It shows recorded wind speeds for the first 14 days of August 2005. The wind systems are colour coded, and explained in the key.

2006 será la cuarta temporada de mediciones meteorológicas hecho por nuestro proyecto en Hawaii – el tiempo es un factor muy importante controlando el comportamiento de las tortugas y las condiciones dentro de sus nidos. Sin embargo, nuestras mediciones están hechas manualmente, al amanecer, mediodía y al anochecer, que no nos ha dado una buena apreciación de las condiciones del viento, las cuales cambian cada hora. En 2005 construimos e instalamos un anemómetro sencillo con grabación automática de datos, a 5m arriba del nivel de la tierra. Los datos que ahora estamos grabando nos están enseñando claramente los sistemas del viento que operan – haga clic en la grafica arriba para verla mejor. Esta grafica contiene datos de la velocidad del viento para las dos primeras semanas de agosto de este año. Los sistemas de viento identificado por colores están explicados en la clave abajo.
ONSHORE BREEZE Caused by hot air rising over the land during the day - draws a breeze from the sea from mid-morning until early evening. Velocity peaks in the early afternoon, sometimes reaching 8m/s BRISA DESDE EL MAR Causado por aire caliente subiendo sobre la tierra durante el día – jala una brisa desde el mar por la media mañana hasta temprano en la noche. La velocidad pueda subir hasta 8 m/s durante la tarde.
OFFSHORE BREEZE Caused by the residual warmth of the sea during the night, with convection drawing a weak breeze off the land. BRISA DESDE LA TIERRA Causado por el calor residual del mar durante la noche, con un proceso de convección que jala una brisa suave desde la tierra
CHUBASCO WIND A short-lived but strong wind (peak speeds reaching 15 m/s) associated with individual convection storms (with strong rain and fierce thunder and lightening). Can occur at any time from the late afternoon to the early morning. Wind direction is variable, but normally from the SE. Turtles often nest during the last stages of a Chubasco event. VIENTO 'CHUBASCO'  Un viento de duración corta pero velocidad fuerte (llegando hasta 15 m/s) asociado con tormentas individuales de convección (con lluvia fuerte y lámparas y tronos). Pueda pasar a cualquier hora desde tarde en la tarde hasta la madrugada. La dirección del viento puede ser variable pero normalmente llege desde el sur-este.  La tortugas frecuentemente anidan durante las últimas etapas de un evento Chubasco.
