El Gariton team gets down to work

After arriving in Guatemala at the end of the first week in July, the volunteers spent two weeks on induction and language courses, and visiting the other hatcheries. By the last week of the month they were settled in El Gariton and beginning project work under the guidance of Eliasa (local manager) and Scott (Ambios team leader).

Los voluntarios han llegado en Guatemala a finales de la primera semana de julio. Después de asistir en un curso de inducción, han visitado  los sitios de los otros viveros del proyecto. Para la última semana del mes estaban establecidos en El Gariton empezando con el trabajo del proyecto, guiado por Eliasa (gerente local) y Scott (equipo de Ambios).

All the volunteers on the project are stretching their minds around the concept of 'cusps and embayments' - the rhythmical undulations of the beach produced by the action of the waves. These features can have implications for nesting turtles - in terms of both selecting and gaining access to upper-beach nesting sites. El Gariton has particularly well developed cusp systems, the migration of which can cause beach-cliffs of up to 2m height to develop, a serious obstacle for a nesting Parlama (click on photo below).

Todos los voluntarios del proyecto están peleando con el concepto de ‘cusps y embayments’ – las undulaciones rítmicos de la playa producidas por la acción del oleaje. Estas estructuras tendrán implicaciones para la anidación de las tortugas – afectando la selección de y también el acceso a los sitios de anidación en la playa arriba. El Gariton tiene sistemas de cusps bien desarrollados, la migración de aquellos pueden resultar en la formación de desnivelaciones en la playa de una altura de 2m, un obstáculo muy enserio para una parlama tratando de anidar (clic en el foto al lado derecho)
